The car is one of  the most precious possessions  of the French .  Horizon gives you 5 simple tips to extend the life of  your  used vehicle.

While the French tend to change cars regularly, some want to keep their vehicle for a long time, sometimes even for its entire lifespan. These tips will help you keep your used vehicle in good condition for many years to come.

Perform periodic maintenance

The best way to extend the life of a used vehicle is to have it serviced  regularly . Oil changes are particularly important because they are directly related to engine wear. You will also need to make sure that the other  fluids  in your vehicle are  properly  filled  (brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, coolant)  and that the main mechanical components remain in good condition.

Change the air filter regularly

The air filter, which should not be confused with the cabin filter, protects your engine from impurities that may enter it. More specifically, it is responsible for the quality of the air-fuel mixture within the engine. Two main indicators allow you to detect a bad air filter: dark exhaust smoke, lack of power when accelerating. The air filter must be replaced every 20,000 kilometers on average.

Don’t neglect tire pressure

Tires that are underinflated compared to the recommended pressure level can have a serious impact on your gas mileage and the stability of your used vehicle. Remember to check the recommended pressure level which generally appears on the side of each tire, inside the driver’s side door or in the manufacturer’s manual. This check is particularly important when you are about to make a long journey, such as going on vacation, for example.

Driving with a hot engine

One of the biggest causes of engine damage is starting your car while the engine is still cold. The engine break-in period varies by model  but is still important. It is recommended to wait a few minutes before starting the vehicle, especially in winter, to ensure that the engine is warm and properly lubricated. This action  is essential  during the first few thousand kilometers and increases the life of your vehicle for sure.

Drive with linearity

The lifespan of your used car also depends on how it is used. If you tend to accelerate or brake suddenly, it is normal  that over time, the brakes, the engine and the transmission are damaged more quickly. Furthermore, the clutch must be monitored. It is particularly advisable not to use it as a means of stopping the vehicle. Indeed, it  is essential that the clutch maintains a constant pressure.
